California learns of child support ordered for man with 25 kids

California readers may be familiar with the story of a man who fathered 25 children in another state. Now the man is facing claims that he failed to pay his court-ordered child support to at least two of the 15 mothers of his children. In fact, the two women say, the father of their children owes them $27,000 and $36,000 respectively.

Other women who have had children with the man assert that they have received little in the form of child support payments. They assert that he has paid amounts as small as $6 and $9 each month. What is unclear is if the small amount was the child support that he had been ordered to pay to these women.

The question comes because the man in this case has claimed that he has no income to pay child support. However, some of the mothers of his children point to his purchase of several cars and other evidence to demonstrate that the man may be attempting to hide his true income from the court. This effort may be in part due to the fact that, as is the case in California, the court uses the income of the parents of a child to determine how much child support is to be paid each month.

The man in this case has fathered an extreme number of children. This makes his case for child support more complicated as there are many people to divide the amount available to pay. However, like all who owe child support because they are the non-custodial parent of a child, the man in this case will be ordered to pay for his kids. If he fails to do so, as he may have in at least two of the matters, he could face economic and other penalties. Non-custodial parents who are unable to make their mandatory payments should keep in mind that they can seek a modification in child support payments if necessary.
