California child support must be paid or penalties apply

Many California readers would likely agree that winning $10,000 at a local casino is a good thing. One man from another state recently learned that is not always the case. This is because he is said to owe the custodial parent of his child $6,000 in back child support payments.

In one recent case that may be of interest to our California readers, a man won $10,000 at a local casino. Shortly after leaving the casino, he was pulled over by police for a traffic stop. The incident led police to learn that an arrest warrant had been issued for failing to pay child support. They arrested the man and took him to a local jail. There they discovered that he had $13,000 in cash in his possession.

Those who have been through the child support process in California know that the payments are mandatory once ordered for a non-custodial parent. When the person ordered to pay fails to do so, they can face penalties from the court. These penalties can include not only fines and fees, but in some cases arrest and even jail.

The custodial parent may be interested to discover the large amount of cash in this man's possession at the time of his arrest. Though it is not clear if this money will go for back child support payments, it is likely that the man will face questions regarding his ability to pay. In situations where a non-custodial parent is unable to pay the court-ordered child support, he or she may wish to be proactive and petition for a payment modification through the courts.
