Service of divorce papers can cause emotions to run high

An elderly California woman is recovering from injuries to her abdomen and hand as a result of shots fired by her husband as she was serving him with divorce papers. The woman was taken to a local hospital where she is reported to be in stable condition. Her 82-year old husband was taken into custody by police and charges are pending.

This incident underscores how disturbing divorce can be for some people. Often, it is better for the person contemplating divorce to seek information about the process and how to go about separating themselves from their spouse before taking any actions. Having a plan in place can make the transition into a new phase of life easier and less disturbing.

If the divorce is being sought by only one of the parties, it can be very helpful for that person to have an idea of where they plan to live and how they will take care of financial matters until the court has decided matters such as the division of property and spousal support. Often these issues can take some time, especially if one spouse is reluctant to cooperate. Having a plan in place will allow the divorcing parties the time and space needed to come to an amicable resolution.

Divorce is a process of separating two persons who have legally been joined, and distributing property held in common. Having a familiarity with the California laws that govern the process can be important when deciding how to proceed. Often, it is best to get advice or assistance with those parts of the process that may be disturbing or a cause for emotional distress. In that way, both parties can proceed through the process with the least amount of anxiety possible.
