California child support | Putting the focus on loving dads

On Behalf of | Oct 18, 2016 | Child Support |

When it comes to the public’s perspective on child support, many noncustodial fathers get a bad rap. The focus is often on the custodial parent who is entitled to receive child support. This is usually the mother. It is not fair to single out all fathers and think of them as dead-beat-dads. In fact, many California fathers want to provide for their children. They love their kids and are often in despair about their inability to effectively pay child support.

Lawmakers and fathers’ rights advocates are not unaware of the issues fathers face in paying child support. For example, the National Fatherhood Initiative and even the National Congress of State Legislatures recognize the financial problems dads who are responsible for child support often face. As family law attorneys, we also recognize these issues. While there is no quick remedy available to assist dads (or moms) in meeting their child support obligations, we do have some advice to offer.

Do not simply stop paying. Seek help right away if you are having trouble making your payments.

Do not avoid your children if you experience trouble making child support. Your kids need you and the California court system needs to see how invested you are in your kids.

Do not avoid going to hearings. Even though you may feel embarrassed or even ashamed of your inability to pay, it is unwise to miss court appearances regarding child support.

Do not assume you are alone. Logically, you probably know that other fathers are facing similar issues, but emotionally, you may feel that you are the single worst father in the world. We want you to know that you are not and the fact that you care enough to feel despair is proof of your commitment to fatherhood.

Finally, please consider seeking legal help for your child support issues. Explore our website if you need to learn more.
