The Memorial Day weekend holiday is the unofficial beginning of summer. (because the official start is not until June 22). Nevertheless, many families tend to celebrate the holiday with trips to amusement parks, picnics and swim parties. Some divorced and separated parents may not be able to enjoy the weekend with their kids , especially when the other parent doesn’t follow their parenting time order.

So what can (or should) a parent to do in these situations? This post will provide some helpful tips.

Know how your order works – Indeed, some parenting time decrees can be confusing when it comes to explaining how holiday parenting time works, but it should have a section detailing these changes to your normal schedule.

Don’t get carried away – Yes, you are right to feel like you have been disrespected by not being allowed to spend time with your child. However, matters may only be made worse by taking matters into your own hands and trying to enforce your prospective of the order on your own. Seek court intervention instead forcing your will.

Know about compensatory time – When court ordered parenting time is missed, the basic remedy is compensatory time. Essentially, an aggrieved parent will be awarded additional time at a later date to make up for the time that was missed. However, it is possible that a court may (or may not) reimburse you for money you spent in preparation for parenting time that you missed.

Should you have additional questions about what to do about missed parenting time, an experienced family law attorney can help.
