Domestic violence lawyers: The backbone of your support system

On Behalf of | Sep 12, 2016 | Domestic Violence |

Victims of domestic violence in California and elsewhere often have a hard time discussing their experiences with other people. This is especially so if the victim feels that their friends or family members cannot possibly understand what they are going through. Unfortunately, the strongest part of any support system is acknowledging what has happened and getting it out in the open. Once this hurdle has been overcome, talking about what happened and beginning to heal emotionally may become much easier.

All of the people who surround and support domestic violence victims are important. Each one fills a much-needed void in the victim’s life and hastens his or her journey toward recovery. Domestic violence attorneys are not therapists or counselors, but they do quite often hold an unexpected place within the victim’s circle of support.

For one, the attorney has experience with domestic violence and has seen the consequences, resulting in a deep understanding of the associated trauma. Second, in most cases, the victim does not know the attorney. Instead of inhibiting the victim, this often enables him or her to open up about what has happened. This, in turn, can empower a victim to talk about his or her experiences with other members of the support system.

One of the most valuable things about a lawyer and client relationship is a shared commitment to keeping you safe from further harm. Whether it is helping you obtain a protection order or representing you in a court setting, a lawyer can be the strong backbone you need to emerge from your ordeal as whole as possible. We urge you to learn more about how attorneys can help if you are a victim of domestic violence.
