How do you know when it's time to end your marriage? Could you and your spouse work things out and restore the bliss you once felt?

It depends. Relationship experts say that there are some definite signs that a couple would be better off divorced. In order to determine whether or not your marriage is salvageable, ask yourself some questions:

1. Has your spouse crossed a line that can't be uncrossed?

There are certain "deal breakers" in a marriage that are almost impossible to overcome. They usually include abuse, infidelity and addiction, although there can be others.

2. Has contempt crept into your relationship?

Contempt is a difficult emotion to overcome because it generally occurs when one spouse feels superior to the other. Whether you feel contempt for your spouse or your spouse is showing contempt for you, that's a sign that your relationship is failing.

3. Can you still appreciate your spouse at all?

Do you feel any sense of gratitude or appreciation for your spouse's presence or contributions to the marriage? If not, you may have an impossible time trying to save the relationship. A lack of appreciation means that you no longer feel like your spouse is bringing anything of value to the marriage.

4. Has your relationship gotten cold?

It may not be good if you're fighting all the time, but couples who have become emotionally detached about their relationship are in a worse position than couples who fight. If you find yourself shrugging off the issues with your spouse rather than fighting about it, that's a sign that you're past caring.

5. Have you given the marriage your best?

If you can't honestly say that you've tried to work out your troubles, then it isn't time for a divorce. On the other hand, if you've tried your hardest to overcome the difficulties in your marriage and failed, you may not have another good option.

Remember, it's not a bad thing to seek a divorce when a marriage is failing. In fact, a divorce may be the healthiest choice you can make.
