You've probably heard of destination weddings, but have you heard of destination divorces yet?

Well, get ready. If you haven't been invited to one yet, you probably will soon. (Or, if your own marriage is on its last legs, you may want to consider throwing a destination divorce yourself!)

These days, divorce is seen as an opportunity to get a fresh start on life and reinvent oneself -- and just like destination weddings, people want to share the start of their journey with the friends and family members they love best.

While you can't exactly invite a crowd into the court while the judge pronounces you divorced, you can embark on a sort of "divorce retreat" with your closest friends and confidants. Something like a reverse honeymoon, these trips are growing in popularity among the newly divorced.

According to people in the hospitality industry, the whole movement surrounding destination divorces started about a decade ago but has really come into vogue in the last few years. Even divorce cakes have become a trend used to celebrate divorces.

The divorced "bride" or "groom" usually has a low-key affair with just a few companions, and they pick a vacation hotspot and a nice hotel with all the trimmings to treat themselves to a relaxing weekend (or week) before starting their new life.

It's hard to find anything wrong with this trend. Divorce -- like marriage -- is the start of big changes in someone's life and is often the most positive step someone can take given their situation at the time. There's no reason not to celebrate it.

If you're ready to take a step toward a newly-single existence, a divorce attorney can help you assess your options.
