Your Trip To The Courthouse
Preparing For Court
One of the most important, yet often overlooked, aspects of a divorce case revolves around going to court. While a trip to the courthouse is not required in every divorce, if you do end up having to go to court, there are several important factors you should know and consider.
At Cullen & Murphy, we will help you prepare for appearances in court. Our attorneys will answer your questions and provide practical advice that can make a big difference in the outcome of your divorce case.
Getting To The Courthouse
While this may sound obvious, it is very important to make sure that you know how to get to the courthouse and where you need to go when you get there:
- Look up directions and plan your route in advance
- Plan to arrive early
- Know where you should park
At The Courthouse
This may be your first time going to court, and the process can be disorienting and intimidating. Knowing what to expect once you enter the courthouse can ease feelings of anxiety and help you feel more prepared and confident:
- You and your belongings must pass through a metal detector.
- There is no food or drink allowed in the courtroom.
- Arrange for child care as children are not allowed in the courtroom.
In The Courtroom
When you step into the courtroom, it is very important to understand that a judge’s job is to judge and that he or she is human and prone to make assumptions based upon what you do and say and, just as importantly, what you don’t do or say. With that in mind:
- Dress in appropriate business attire.
- Listen and be respectful.
- You may bring along a friend or relative for support, but avoid bringing an entourage.
