Sometimes the divorce process in California can take many months or even years to complete. In cases where there are significant assets to be divided, the time can be delayed as the divorcing spouses try to come up with an agreement. In cases where no agreement can be reached, there may be court involvement through litigation or in the final divorce settlement.
When one of the spouses going through a divorce is a celebrity, the assets are often substantial. This is the case in the recently reported divorce of “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Milan and his wife. The couple was reportedly married for 18 years. According to sources, the couple filed for divorce in 2010. However, it was not until recently that this divorce became final, showing just how complex high-asset divorces can be.
According to documents filed with the court, Milan is to pay his wife for spousal support based on his reported $170,000 per month income. These include a one-time $400,000 payment and $23,000 per month in maintenance. He will also pay $10,000 in child support every month. While details were not released about child custody, when the pair first filed for divorce, the mother was apparently seeking full custody with visitation time for Milan.
Like others who experience divorce in California, this couple has had to work to determine who will receive which assets. They likely have also had to discuss custody arrangement for the children. Though the details of their decisions in these matters have not been made public, they, like all those in a divorce, have presumably worked to reach a settlement that is the best interests of each as well as their children.
