Divorce in California presents unique challenges during holidays

On Behalf of Cullen Family Law Group | Dec 26, 2013 | Divorce |

Although divorce can certainly be difficult for the two married individuals involved, it can also be tough for the children. Kids often are caught in the middle of two parents who have decided to part ways due to irreconcilable differences in California. A recent article explains how to help to minimize the stress of divorce that children may feel — especially during the holidays, when gifts are given to children by both parents.

Experts say that Christmas gifts often make the holidays more frustrating for both the kids and the parents following a divorce. For example, if a child gets a toy such as a video game machine from one parent but wants to use it at the other parent’s home, too, he or she has to take the game back and forth between the two homes. Also, sometimes, one parent may purchase a gift for a child that the other parent doesn’t necessarily like.

In a divorce situation, both parents would benefit from planning the gifts that the children will receive. In addition, parents who have primary custody of their children, and who have gifted their children with certain items, would be wise to avoid banning the children from using those items at the ex-spouses’ homes. Maintaining peace among the kids when it comes to Christmas gifts will help to facilitate a peaceful holiday for the entire family.

Divorce can be financially difficult when areas such as asset or property division are being debated by the married couple. In addition, if kids are involved, the situation can be emotionally tough — especially as far as the subject of child custody is concerned in California. Understanding the related laws will allow a person to seek not only his or her best interests but also those of an ex-spouse and those of their kids, in an effort to reach a solution that is mutually satisfying during this type of family law proceeding.
