Fast. Fair. Thorough.

Three ways to deal with a lying spouse during divorce

On Behalf of Cullen Family Law Group | Oct 17, 2023 | Divorce |

Your lying spouse isn’t going to stop being dishonest just because they’re subjected to your divorce’s legal process. Therefore, as you prepare to enter your marriage dissolution, you’ll need to find ways to prove that your spouse is being dishonest. This may be the only way to protect your interests and secure the financial resources and child custody arrangement that’s fair and just under the circumstances.

But how can you hold your spouse accountable for their lies and ensure that you get a fair shake in your divorce?

Ways to handle a lying spouse in a divorce

Fortunately, there are several ways to address this issue. Here are some that you might want to consider implementing in your marriage dissolution:

  • Use documentation. If your spouse is lying about financial matters, then you can probably disprove them by showing documentation to the contrary. If the lies pertain to your ability to care for your children, then seek out school and medical records that show otherwise. So, gather all the records you need to paint a clear picture.
  • Reduce communications to writing. Your lying spouse is probably going to manipulate your statements to fit their goals. You can avoid them doing this by putting everything in writing, that way you can refer back to it to when needed.
  • Keep a journal. If you end up having face-to-face or verbal interactions with your spouse, then you should write down what happened in a journal when your memory is fresh. This will help you avoid a situation when your spouse tries to convince you that events played out differently than you recall.

Be comprehensive in developing your divorce strategy

There’s a lot that goes into effectively divorcing a lying spouse. Therefore, you should view the three tips mentioned above as a starting point. If you want to ensure that you protect your interests as fully as possible, then please continue to read our website to learn more about what you can do in the divorce process to position yourself for success.
