Protecting your mental wellbeing during divorce

On Behalf of Cullen Family Law Group | Aug 9, 2024 | Divorce |

While divorce can reshape your finances and your daily living, it can also have a tremendous impact on your emotional and psychological wellbeing. After all, it can feel like the life you’ve worked hard to build is crashing down around you, leaving you worried about what your future will look like and how to gain the stability you need.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your mental health during divorce. Let’s look at some of them so that you can ease your stress, protect your overall wellbeing, and find a way to navigate your divorce that protects the next phase of your life.

Coping with the mental challenges of divorce

Although the divorce process can feel chaotic and you might not know where to turn for the support that you need, there are ways to protect your mental wellbeing. This includes doing the following:

  • Trying not to be hard on yourself and giving yourself a break, realizing that it’s okay to operate at something less than 100% as you navigate your marriage dissolution.
  • Wrapping yourself in support from family members, friends, support groups, and mental health professionals so that you don’t feel like you’re going through this process alone.
  • Getting plenty of rest and eating healthily so that you’re taking care of your mind and body.
  • Finding ways to reduce conflict with your spouse, such as by reducing everything to writing and avoiding dragging up events from the past that will only trigger arguments.
  • Exploring hobbies and interests that can energize you, give you a new sense of purpose in life, and provide you an outlet during the challenging times of divorce.
  • Focusing on your children so that you can protect their best interests.
  • Knowing that you can and will get through the divorce process.

Fully protect yourself in your divorce

There’s a lot at stake in your divorce. But you can take control of the divorce process to protect your interests, including your mental health.
